Paleo Cookies are Still Junk Food

The paleo diet is a simple one based on lots of fresh vegetables, lean meats, healthy fats in the forms of nuts, seeds and oils and some fruit. These nutrient dense whole foods are the foundation of health. If you stick to those elements you will experience a myriad of health benefits. But it is easy to get off track. All it takes is a paleo cookie or two or three…

Don’t even start with the whole “it’s paleo” to justify the cookie. Frankly, it doesn’t matter if the cookie was made with almond flour or that the banana bread was made with coconut flour. It’s still junk food!

Many people have an unhealthy relationship with food. If you’ve read “It Starts With Food” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig you know that foods like cookies, cake and bread trigger an addictive response in the brain. You eat one cookie, but are not satisfied so you eat more. Even before the cookies have cooled the entire batch is gone. The same thing happens with paleo treats.

You need to address your food issues before treats of any kind can have a place in your diet. That means cutting addictive foods cold turkey. Sugar, even paleo ones like honey and pure maple syrup, will feed the addiction response. It takes at least a month or more of  clean, zero sugar eating to put your addiction in check.

That means no paleo treats! This includes alcohol. There is no “occasional” when you are focusing in re-establishing your health. Not an “occasional” Friday because it’s your best friend’s birthday and not an “occasional” Tuesday because you had a bad day and want a little something. A little something will become a lot very quickly.
